January 2011

Once again this year, Aberystwyth played host to the Hacio’r Iaith confrence. 40 or so people interested on technology, social media and the future of the language on the web, all gathered in once place for a day of lively discussion.

Hacio'r Iaith

There were some exceptionally interesting sessions on handling data, standardised translations, bilingual blogging and promoting the work of Gwilym Deudraeth. The Haclediad mob had a good time recording episode #5 infront of a live audience. I especially had fun presenting a session on bilingual blogging (the first time I’d done so infront of a barcamp audience). I think it went well, and I don’t have a particular memory of falling over myself. To be honest. it was really fun to lead a discussion on the merits of monolingual verus bilingual content.

I always enjoy getting together with web people, it always gives a great chance to compare notes and gather ideas for the next project, and it’s always a decent excuse for a beer or two.

Hacio'r Iaith

I’ve got a few more pictures on Flickr (Hacio’r Iaith – In Pictures), and we’ll be compiling all the coverage on the Hacio’r Iaith website. I also ask that if you gave a talk, could you please put your slides up on the Hacio’r Iaith lanyrd page?

I also had a chance to wander around Aberystwyth with the camera, and I’m very grateful to Rory for putting up with me asking “Do you think this is okay?” endlessly, or “do you think this’ll work? Damn…”

Back to it!
Update – 1/2/11:
Forgot to post a link to the pictures I took around Aberystwyth: Aberystwyth (Flickr)

Grabbed a photo of a red, white and blue mini… You know, like in the Italian Job…

I recently picked up something I’ve been after for quite some time:

Image of a Canon EOS500D

A Canon EOS500D digital SLR camera.
I’ve had an interest in photography for quite some time (I actually qualified for the Urdd Eisteddfod’s Photography category way back when, missing out on the competition because the Schoolteacher forgot to send the entries off to the Judges in time). Until now though, it’s not something I’ve been able to do properly (due in part to having really naff cameras and a failure on my part to learn how to use them properly).

Having said that, I’m really pleased with some of the images I’ve been able to pull off with my ‘naff’ cameras – I managed some reasonable snaps of St David’s last year, including this one of one of the ceiling. My favourite set is still the ‘Wales from the Air’ series , which I took during Mine and Gareth’s trip to Swansea for a curry (yeah, we flew down to Swansea for a curry… what of it?).

I’m now forcing myself to learn how to use the new camera’s features (and staying away from the full-auto settings), and trying not to feel so self concious when standing in the middle of a busy street pointing a camera at things. My research into techniques has lead me to some really nice photo/photography blogs (including Mostly Lisa and Photoshop Insider), which have helped a bit in getting to grips with the subject. I’ve been out and about a bit in Chester (with mixed results…). So, look forward to some more over/underexposed shots over the next few months…

So, preperations are well underway for the 2nd annual Welsh language barcamp “Hacio’r Iaith” in Aberystwyth. Together with multiple smaller barcamps held througought Wales last year, the Aberystwyth meeting represents one of the largest gatherings of Welsh-language tech enthusiasts. Last year’s meeting was really amazing, meeting people who’re doing really cool stuff with technology all over Wales (from the fabulous Seibercofis project – taking old hardware, sticking Linux on it and donating it to families without computers, through to the amazing work done by Gruffydd Prys, translating Civ 4 into Welsh).

In a slight change to the usual Barcamp format, a few fixed sessions have been sheduled. The Haclediad crew (Sioned, Iestyn and Myself) will throw caution to the wind and record the 5th episode of our podcast infront of an actual audience. I’m looking forward for a chance to meet up with friends again, and hopefully meet a few new people. Whilst the event will be primarily in Welsh, we’re going to try to make available a simultaineous translation facility so that anyone and everyone can take part.

The thing about the Barcamp format is, it’s all about the interaction, and the more you take part, the better it is. I’ve seen sessions done at these events where someone showed off the cool tech they’d built with an Arduino board, which was followed by someone giving a 30 minute primer on British Sign Language.

So if you’re in or near Aberystywth on the 29th of January, and have an interest in the Web, social media, technology or just want a curry and a chin-wag, then come along. Register your interest on the Haciaith 2011 Lanyrd page, or at the bottom of the Hacio’r Iaith 2011 Wiki page. If you want to give a presentation (it doesn’t have to be a 30 minute powerpoint presentaiton), you can sign up on the Lanyrd page, or just turn up and sign up on the day.

See you there!

So, we’re almost a week into 2011, and everything still seems to be ticking over. I had a rather lovely time touring the Emirates on a cruise ship over the Christmas/New Year break. Dubai and Abu Dhabi rather strike me as being what a Disney country would look like. Everything looks perfect and done on a ludicrous scale.

“We have all this money… what should we do with it? I know, let’s build islands in the sea in the shape of the World!”

In anycase, I’ll be uploading the photos to Flickr in due course (once I’ve had a chance to remove all the rubbish ones).

Back though in reality, there’s the 2nd ‘Hacio’r Iaith‘ Barcamp conference at the end of this month (29th January). There’ll be interesting sessions, much discussion, curry, and a live recording of the Haciaith Podcast to watch. If you’re interested in attending ‘Hacio’r Iaith’, follow the link to the Lanyrd page.

Right, crack on…
